How to Start an Online Business and Keep your Full Time Job
February 8th, 2007 by asianTom
Most successful online businesses start as hobbies and can easily be started in your free time. That’s how my sites started. The internt is great because people can access your site all the time but it doesn’t require you to be at the computer all the time.
Let’s say you have a full time job and get home from work at 6pm. After dinner, you usually watch TV? No problem, put the TV near the computer while you work on your website. Don’t make it feel like work, think of it as a hobby. If your goal is to make money, that will come later.
If you only have 3 hours to work on your site, break the time down to work efficiently. Spend 30 mins on content, 30 mins on marketing, 30 mins on answering emails. This is only an example, depending on the topic of your site, give each area of the business attention. Don’t just work on the design while neglecting other important aspects.
Most cell phones can access the Internet, while you’re at work during the day check your site email and answer questions. This will give your visitors a sense that your site is always being monitored. Put a date function on your site, this will also give your site a sense that’s it’s being updated everyday. On one of my membership sites that charge money, I programmed a date function that is always one day ahead and put the words discount ends tomorrow. This creates a sense of urgency and gets people to sign up. So what are you waiting for. Good luck.

Great ideas, Tom. I’ve been working really hard to keep that balance you were talking about between sales, martketing, advertising, leads, etc. and have found much more success when I’m consistent in all areas, not just one. It obviously takes a lot of time up front, but the time obviously pays off as a result of this balanced approach.
Thanks for the reminder.
